I gave check in assistant 5 stars in the Android Market, based on the beta versions functionality, but it only gives me a "invalid_request" error when foursquare tries to "allow" it to access my account

That problem was fixed with the most recent version of the application. I rewrote the login system after a few conversations with the Foursquare guys. You shouldn't have any more problems.
